I’m Carly Howitt, a fully qualified therapist with over 10 years experience working as a psychological therapist in the NHS.
I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist accredited with the BABCP and an Interpersonal Therapist accredited with IPTUK. I have also received extensive training in Compassion Focussed Therapy and often find a huge benefit to applying this approach in my work with clients.
At CH Psychotherapies, I use a person-centred approach to therapy, ensuring that each individual feels heard and valued. I will ensure therapy is tailored to meet your unique needs, promoting healing and personal growth.

I offer individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Compassion Focussed Therapy.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy aims to help us understand how our thoughts, physical and emotional feelings and our behavioral responses are all connected, and how sometimes this can leave us feeling stuck in a "vicious cycle". The treatment allows us to identify these patterns in responding, in order to find more helpful alternatives. It is a goal driven treatment, but it is okay if you are not sure on your goals at the outset, this is something we can figure out together. Whilst we primarily look at what is happening in the present, we will also look at earlier experiences to give us an understanding of how these patterns have been created.
Interpersonal Therapy is a treatment for depression. It works by understanding how difficulties within relationships or the lack of supportive relationships can contribute to our struggles, and provides tools to help understand and overcome any difficulties within relationships. During IPT we will look to process one of 4 key interpersonal areas that may have contributed to the onset of depression. These include, complex grief, transitions (major life changes such as separation, becoming a parent or retirement), disputes within a significant relationship or ongoing difficulties in establishing supportive relationships.
Compassion Focussed Therapy is a very helpful approach used for when we are experiencing lots of self-cricism, shame and emotional difficulties. It draws upon neuroscience, CBT, and our understanding of how we have evolved, to teach us how to be kinder to ourselves to alleviate emotional suffering
I also offer bespoke workshops on stress management and well-being techniques. If this is something you are interested in, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
I am able to offer talks at local events and will ensure to tailor this to your audience.
I provide CBT supervision, which can be arranged as a regular contact or as and when needed.

We can all experience anxiety with the pressures of modern life, and sometimes these feelings can start to mount and overwhelm us.
This is a list of common anxiety problems I can help with:
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Social Phobia
- Panic Disorder
- Agoraphobia
- Phobias
-Health anxiety
Sometimes anxiety shows up in different ways so it is normal if you find yourself experiencing one or more of these at the same time, we can work together to unpick and understand this.
Depression can be all consuming and totally envelope our lives. Whether you have had depression for a short time, had multiple episodes, or felt as though it has been with you a long time, we can work together to understand what is keeping you stuck. We will look at the negative thinking styles that are affecting your mood, where these have come from, and how we can overcome them.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing a very stressful, frightening, or distressing event. It is a type of mental health problem that can cause a range of symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the traumatic event. While many people experience negative reactions after a trauma, these reactions usually improve over time. With PTSD, however, these negative reactions don't go away and interfere with daily life. Treatment aims to help you process the event so that it no longer impacts day to day life.
Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) can develop after prolonged or repeated exposure to trauma, such as ongoing abuse or neglect. It includes symptoms similar to PTSD, such as flashbacks and avoidance, plus additional difficulties in emotion regulation, self-perception, and relationships. Key symptoms include intense feelings of shame, worthlessness, guilt, anger, and emotional numbness, as well as problems with relationships and a distorted sense of self.
My first aim when treating CPTSD is to focus on building a supportive and trusting working relationship, before navigating any processing work and working on improving self-esteem.
We can all experience difficulties with our sleep from time to time, and can appreciate just how much impact a lack of sleep can have on our lives. Chronic insomnia can be utterly debilitating and prevent us from being able to fully enjoy life.
Treatment involves understanding what is happening with your current sleep patterns, and over time increasing your sleep window until you are achieving a much better night's sleep.
